FAQ for Museum Professionals

What is The America in US?

The America in US is a free service for museums and their visitors designed for the celebration of America 250.

QR codes placed at museum exhibits across the nation allow visitors to discover relationships to featured historical people in just a few seconds.

The America in US website amplifies voices from local history museums, sharing little-known stories related to the pursuit of the ideals of the Declaration of Independence with a national audience.

Why The America in US?

Within each of us lives both America's past and America's future.

Museums preserve the stories of courage, compassion, determination, creativity, and hope that belong to all of us. The America in US is a tool that increases engagement in these stories.

Contemplating our connection to the American story--and to each other--empowers us to change our future.

How does The America in US work?

You provide museum profile information and a basic bio info for a featured person(s).

The America in US creates:

-Landing page for your museum

-Biography page(s) for your person(s)

-Relationship search page(s) for the person(s)

-QR code to post near the exhibit(s)

-Pin for your museum on the TAIU interactive map.

Who can participate?

Historical organizations of all types and size are invited to participate. Libraries, visitor centers, and other venues with small collections are also welcome.

What about our visitors' privacy?

There is NO user data collected or stored whatsoever. The search fields do not add to a database; they only search one.

No personal information is required to discover a relationship with the historical person, and no account is needed or created.

Visitors only enter the name of a deceased person and the state of death, if known. It is highly recommended that they use a grandparent or other close relative so that the search results are valid; however, they can input any name that they choose.

Our museum doesn't have ties to 1776. Can we still participate?

YES!The America in US celebrates the continued struggle to establish the ideals of the Declaration of Independence, not exclusively the revolutionary time period.

Your museum certainly features people who have stood for the ideals of justice, liberty, and civil rights; been examples of compassion, courage, or determination; or contributed to technological advances, scientific knowledge or the arts.

Is it really free?

YES!The America in US is absolutely free for both museums and for visitors!

TAIU is a labor of love created by a mom and UX student whose children's lives were transformed by their experiences at museums and historic sites across the US.

She has developed this project as part of her coursework at Arizona State University to give back to those museums and to inspire others to explore the rich experiences available in them--especially during 2026.

I'm already wearing too many hats. How much time will this take?

We hear you, small museums!

It only takes about 10 minutes to submit the information for your profile page and one historical figure.

How many historical people can we include?

Currently there is no limit, but during beta testing the first 10 people on each organization's request will be given priority in order to accommodate rapid onboarding for everyone.

Groups of people who are featured together in an exhibit can be all included in one search with one QR code, for example, teams, military regiments, and other cohorts.

How can we post a bio for our featured people?

We will ask you to answer a few questions so that we can put together a brief bio.

To enhance user experience, we are striving for a consistent format across the platform. Our bios will include highlights of accomplishments and/or character traits as they relate to your America 250 programming.

We are always happy to include links to lengthier bios on your website!

What happens when exhibits change?

Just let us know and we will create a new QR code.

There is no need to delete an individual for exhibit changes, just take down their QR code. They will remain findable from the TAIU website, unless you prefer they be removed.

What is the longevity of the database used by the search platform?

For our beta test we are partnering with a licensee of FamilySearch, which is the largest genealogical database in the world.
